Tenure Track Professorship
in Neural Basis of Vocal Communication
salary grade: initially W 2, 5 years; after evaluation W 3 with tenure reference code: BCP-2019-W2-TT-Neuro
The successful applicant will cover the area named above in research and teaching. The professorship is located in the Department of Biology at the interface between Systems Neurosciences and Behavioral Biology.
Appointment requirements are governed by Article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz - BerlHG).
The successful candidate will have an outstanding doctorate, excellent international research achievements as well as internationally visible publications in renowned journals. Moreover, she or he will use a wide spectrum of methods and will combine modern neurophysiological approaches with behavioral studies in vertebrates. The new professor is expected to have a research profile which enables her or him to participate in existing or future network projects. She or he will have experience in acquiring and managing externally funded projects. Furthermore, the appointee will be able to teach courses in German and English.
Apart from the official duties in accordance with Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
The new professor will hold courses offered in the Bachelor´s and Master´s programs in biology (9 LVS), especially in behavioral biology. A possible research focus will be the neural basis of complex communication in the brains of songbirds. Animal experimental studies of the neural processes of learning vocalizations and interactions with vocalisations are desirable. Therefore, the candidate should apply approaches that allow connecting learning and memory processes through the application of complex analytical methods.
In addition, it would be advantageous for the appointee to be involved in the SFB 1315 "Memory Consolidation". Furthermore, she or he should cooperate with colleagues of other neuroscientific network projects (e.g. the excellence cluster Neurocure), of the Neuro computer science and the Cognitive science. The appointee is expected to include ethical aspects of animal testing and aspects of gender and diversity approaches in teaching.
The professor will be appointed as a civil servant for an initial period of five years. Under the condition that the appointee passes the tenure evaluation, upon its expiry the tenure track professorship entails appointment to the tenured position which will not be advertised. Objectives for this evaluation will be negotiated during the appointment procedure for the tenure track professorship (according to Article 102 c BerlHG).
The objectives to be agreed upon will include (but are not limited to) the following areas:

The conditions of employment according to civil service law must be fulfilled at the time of the tenure appointment.
Please note that Article 102 c, Sections 3 and 7 of the BerlHG apply for candidates that completed their PhD at Freie Universität Berlin and/or are employed at Freie Universität Berlin.
