Tenure Track Professorship in Social and Cultural Anthropology
Salary grade: Initially W 2, 5 years; after evaluation W 2 with tenure Reference Code: W2 SKA
The successful applicant will cover the area named above in research and teaching.
Appointment requirements are governed by Article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz - BerlHG).
Successful applicants will have a very good dissertation in social and cultural anthropology or ethnology. We are looking for someone with expertise in at
least one of the following research areas: gender relations, transnationality, and political and/or postcolonial anthropology. The candidate is expected to
have excellent international research activities and research collaborations. She or he will have long-term experience in field research in at least one region
compatible to one of the focus areas of our institute. Proven knowledge of a non-European language is mandatory as well as university teaching experience in an
international environment. Successful candidates will be able to teach seminars in German and English. Furthermore, candidates will have experience in acquiring
funding for, and carrying out, externally funded research.
Apart from the official duties in accordance with Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
The appointee will engage in the development of research activities in the areas named above and teach courses in the institute’s undergraduate degree programs,
including the introductory courses. We expect the appointee to acquire externally funded research projects and to collaborate in joint projects. Missing German or
English language skills will need to be acquired within 2 years. Teaching will include aspects of gender and diversity approaches.
The professor will be appointed as a civil servant for an initial period of five years.
Under the condition that the appointee passes the tenure evaluation, upon its expiry the tenure track professorship entails appointment to the tenured position
which will not be advertised. Objectives for this evaluation will be negotiated during the appointment procedure for the tenure track professorship (according to
Article 102 c BerlHG).
The objectives to be agreed upon will include (but are not limited to) the following areas:
Support of junior scholars
The conditions of employment according to civil service law must be fulfilled at the time of the tenure appointment.
Please note that the Article 102c, Sections 3 and 7 of the BerlHG apply for candidates that completed their PhD at Freie Universität Berlin and/or are employed at Freie Universität Berlin.
Applications should include a CV, copies of all certificates of academic qualification in German or English; if applicable the letter of appointment (please add the translations if needed),
a list of publications, a list of courses previously taught, and evidence of teaching competence. Furthermore, please include information on involvement in ongoing and future research
endeavors, joint research projects and externally funded projects, and if necessary language certificates. If applicable for the respective content area, please give information on
industrial cooperations, inventions/patents and spin-offs.
