Faculty of Social Sciences (FB 08) invites applications for the
following academic position

International Relations, specialising in the politics of global
The appointment is initially for three years. After an interim
advisory review, the appointment will be extended for another
three years. Pending on a positive performance evaluation
after this period of six years, the appointment will become
tenured with a lifetime civil-service position (W2). In order to
allow the junior professors to develop their research profile,
the tenure-track phase has reduced teaching obligations.
The professorship is affiliated to the Institute of Intercultural
and International Studies (InIIS). InIIS links the research fields
of International Relations and European Politics with Political
Theory. The university is searching for an early-career
researcher who has already acquired some experience in
independent research and academic teaching, who is open to
interdisciplinary research and promises to become a leading
scholar in the field in a national and international context.
The university seeks a scholar working empirically on issues of
the global politics of natural resource usage with a discernable
theoretical profile. A focus on non-European regions as well
as knowledge of social theory and/or political theory is
desired. Interest in interdisciplinary cooperation in research
and teaching in the context of promoting the sustainability
goals is expected.
The teaching obligations will be in the bachelor programmes
of the Institute for Political Science and in the Master
programme ‚International Relations: Global Governance and
Social Theory’ (MAIR). Teaching in political science, International
Relations, Social or Political Theory is desired. Teaching in
German and English is expected; an appropriate level of
proficiency in both languages is expected after the first three
years. The position holder will be encouraged to participate in
the concept of research-based teaching, media-based
teaching, and to obtain training in higher-education teaching
skills. Participation in doctoral training in the BIGSSS (Bremen
International School of Social Sciences) is expected.
At the University of Bremen, there is a particular focus on
participation in collaborative projects in social sciences. The
future holder of the position will also participate in the conception
and organisation of joint research projects at the Faculty.
A closer cooperation with the Research Centre for East
European Studies (Forschungsstelle Osteuropa – FSO) can be
taken into consideration as well.
The prerequisites for employment are a corresponding
university degree in political science/international relations, an
outstanding doctorate and evidence of pedagogical aptitude.
Teaching experience at a university level is necessary.
International networks and a track record of successful
research as well as didactic commitment are desired.
Experience in considering gender perspectives in research
and teaching is also highly welcome.
The appointment follows the regulations of §§18 und 18 a
BremHG as well as §117 BremBG. This entails that the only
candidates who have started their PhD work no more than six
years prior to application can be considered. Candidates
holding a PhD degree from the University of Bremen may
apply only if they are no longer employed at the University of
Bremen or if they have been employed elsewhere for at least
