Tenure-Track Professorship (W1/W2) in Crystallography / Geomaterials

Within the framework of the Tenure-Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States the Faculty of Geosciences of the University of Bremen seeks to hire a
Tenure-Track Professor (f/m/d) in Crystallography/Geomaterials
initially in salary group W1,
with tenure-track towards salary group W2 (reference number: JP 586/19)
We invite applications from candidates with first experience in independent research and academic education and developed national and international visibility.
The appointed person will be expected to represent the field of crystallography/ geomaterials in research and teaching, contribute to its further advancement and
facilitate the scientific and academic development of the marine geoscience and material science profiles of the Faculty.
The appointment is initially for three years. After an interim advisory review, the appointment will be extended for a further three years. Pending on a positive
performance evaluation after a maximum of six years, the appointment will become tenured with a life-time civil-service position. To allow the candidates to develop
their profile, the tenure-track phase has lower teaching duties.
During the tenure-track phase, the position holder is expected to develop an independent research profile based on a conceptually and methodologically broad approach. The research program may entail the development of cutting-edge laboratory or analytical methods in characterizing the structures and properties of crystalline geomaterials and/or related synthetic materials. Microscopic or spectroscopic investigation of crystals and the varied interactions with their biotic and abiotic environments is another potential research focus.
The position holder is invited to engage in cooperative research both within and outside the University, benefitting from the established network of partner institutes in the region.
At the Faculty of Geosciences, the MAPEX - Center for Materials and Processes, and the MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, the University of Bremen offer an ideal academic environment for the establishment of disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration. The faculty and both centers offer a wealth of laboratories and analytical facilities (in particular within the MAPEX center) that are open for collaborative research.
Teaching responsibilities cover Bachelor- and Master-level courses in crystallography and material sciences, including laboratory courses. The position holder will be encouraged to obtain training in higher-education teaching skills. Since courses are taught in German and English, an appropriate level of proficiency in both languages is expected after a transitional period.
Applicants are required to hold a university degree with a geoscience focus, an outstanding PhD in relevant field completed no more than five years ago, and a first record of independent research in the field of crystallography/geomaterials, as well as pedagogical aptitude and didactical engagement. The appointment follows the regulations of §§18 und 18 a BremHG as well as §117 BremBG. This entails that the only candidates who have started their PhD work no more than six years prior to application can be considered. Candidates holding a PhD degree from the University of Bremen may apply only if they are no longer employed at the University of Bremen or if they have been employed elsewhere for at least two years.
