Tenure Track Junior Professorship in Biology Education
salary grade: initially W 1; after evaluation W 2 with tenure academics reference code: JunProf. Biology Education
Appointment requirements are governed by Article 102 a of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz - BerlHG).
We are looking for a candidate with a successfully completed university degree in the teacher education program in biology and an outstanding doctorate.
The appointee will have teaching experience of several years at schools, especially the first and second state examination. She or he is expected to have
internationally acknowledged research achievements in the field of biology education and university teaching experience, preferentially internationally.
We expect the professor to be able to teach seminars in German and to have a solid knowledge of the English language. Furthermore, the appointee will have
experience with externally funded research projects.
Apart from the official duties in accordance with Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
The new professor will use approaches to competence development in her or his research program. She or he is expected to participate in the Dahlem School of
Education (DSE) and collaborate with all teacher-training facilities of other departments of Freie Universität Berlin. Furthermore, the appointee will
cooperate interdisciplinarily with colleagues of other research groups, in particular of the natural sciences education, the biology and the educational
sciences. We expect our new colleague to engage in existing and future research associations in Berlin and to consider gender and diversity aspects in teaching.
The junior professor will be appointed as a civil servant for an initial period of three years. Reappointment is contingent upon a positive first evaluation of
performance (Zwischenevaluation) and may be extended for further three years. Under the condition that the appointee passes the tenure evaluation, upon its expiry
the tenure track professorship entails appointment to the W 2 tenure position which will not be advertised. Objectives for this evaluation will be negotiated during
the appointment procedure for the tenure track professorship (according to Article 102 c BerlHG).
The objectives to be agreed upon will include (but are not limited to) the following areas:
Support of junior scholars
The conditions of employment according to civil service law must be fulfilled at the time of the tenure appointment.
Please note that Article 102 c, Sections 3 of the BerlHG applies for candidates that completed their PhD at Freie Universität Berlin and/or are employed at Freie Universität Berlin.
Applications should include a CV, copies of all certificates of academic qualification in German or English; if applicable the letter of appointment (please add translations if needed),
a list of publications, a list of courses previously taught, and evidence of teaching competence. Furthermore, please include information on involvement in ongoing and future research
endeavours, joint research projects and externally funded projects, and if necessary language certificates. If applicable for the respective content area, please give information on
industrial cooperation, inventions/patents and spin-offs.
