Technical University of Munich (TUM)München
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for the position of
Tenure Track Assistant Professor
in »Public Engagement in Science and Technology«
to begin in winter semester 2018/19. The position is a W2 fixed-term position (6 years) with tenure track option to a tenured W3 position (Associate Professor).
The professorship belongs to the TUM School of Governance (GOV) as well as to the Integrative Research Center (IRC) Munich Center for
Technology in Society (MCTS). The MCTS represents a cross-faculty research center interested in the interdependencies between science,
technology and society. The MCTS is dedicated to the transdisciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies, and, from a reflexive
perspective, focuses on the roles of technologies, technological sciences and technical universities. The TUM GOV focuses its research
and teaching on the interaction between politics, society and technology, for instance to integrate future technologies into the political
dialogue and decision-making.
The responsibilities include research and teaching as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. We seek to appoint an expert with a
background in social or political sciences in the research area of the formation of publics and participatory processes in development,
implementation and use of new technologies with a focus on ’science and technology by other means’ (e.g. digital participation, critical
making, or open science), and on analyses of controversies about technoscientific challenges. The teaching load includes courses in the
university’s bachelor and master programs, in particular at TUM GOV and the MCTS. Engagement in the MCTS Forum (dialogue events), as well
as full commitment to do inter- and transdisciplinary research is expected.
We are looking for a candidate who has demonstrated initial scientific achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest
international standards. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification as well as pedagogical
aptitude, including the ability to teach in English, are also prerequisites. Substantial research experience abroad is expected. Experience
in interdisciplinary study programs is required. Considerable experience in applying for third party funding for interdisciplinary and/or
international research projects is mandatory. We expect an innovative research profile in the given field with inter- and transdisciplinary
links between social and techno sciences and publics.
Based on best international standards and transparent performance criteria, TUM offers a merit-based academic career option for tenure track
faculty from Assistant Professor through a permanent position as Associate Professor, and on to Full Professor. The regulations of TUM Faculty
Recruitment and Career System apply.
TUM provides excellent working conditions in a lively scientific community, embedded in the vibrant research environment of the Greater Munich Area.
The TUM Munich Dual Career Office (MDCO) provides tailored career consulting to the partners of newly appointed professors. MDCO gives assistance
for relocation and integration of new professors, their partners and accompanying family members.
TUM is an equal opportunity employer. As such, we explicitly encourage applications from women. Applications from disabled persons with essentially the same qualifications will be given preference.
Application documents should be presented in accordance with TUM’s application guidelines for professors. These guidelines and detailed information about
the TUM Appointment and Career System are available on http://www.tum.de/faculty-recruiting
