DO YOU WANT TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF WIND ENERGY AND CONTRIBUTE YOUR OWN IDEAS? ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING? WE, THE FRAUNHOFER INSTITUTE FOR WIND ENERGY SYSTEMS IWES, ARE LOOKING IN BREMERHAVEN FOR
TALENTS* IN THE FIELD POWER ELECTRONICS AND GRID INTEGRATION
Who we are ...
Wind energy is our main focus. Our institute accommodates more than 300 employees and students from over 30 countries pursuing careers in applied research and development in the field of wind energy use. The key aspect is the production of electricity and hydrogen. Our successful combination: an internationally unique test infrastructure and comprehensive methodological competence in the reliability and validation of wind turbines and wind farms as well as the smart system integration of wind energy in future energy supply systems.
Your working environment ...
You will work in our Dynamic Nacelle Laboratory. We aim to simulate realistic wind and grid conditions in order to test wind turbines just as well, yet far more efficiently, than in the field. To this end, we work on a scale of 1:1 (yes, the dimensions really are breathtaking!). Our nacelle test bench has an output of 10 megawatts: on the one hand, this is truly exciting as it is unique, and, on the other hand, it complicates working. After all, multiple problem analyses have to be carried out, research has to be conducted, and your wealth of experience has to be applied in order to identify solutions which function on this huge system. But don't worry, you won't be left alone with any problems which occur.
The duties awaiting you ...
You will work on various research and industry projects at the same time: for example, we are currently building a mobile test facility with which grid compliance tests can be conducted on systems with an output of up to 28 MVA. In this context, you will develop new test procedures and perform simulations independently. In addition, you will also coordinate the procurement processes with our suppliers. Once the construction is complete, you will handle the commissioning of the test facility. Furthermore, you will conduct tests on site - nevertheless, temporary deployment in another European country should not put you off. You will independently organize field measurement campaigns and support the setup in the field. Is that not enough?
No two days are ever the same!
You will acquire industry projects and apply for publicly funded research projects both within Germany and abroad. After a period of familiarization, you will also assume their management. To this end, you will be in close contact with national and international customers and project partners. You will document your own work and write applications, reports, and publications (yes, that is also part of the job). Moreover, you will conduct research to ensure that you are always in touch with the very latest developments.
Take an active part in shaping your range of tasks!.
Depending on your particular interests, you can also become involved in other areas; we are keen to hear your ideas! Take, for example, our projects looking into tests on converter systems. Would you like to assume responsibility for certain fields and make your own decisions? Then you are exactly right with us!
Our strength lies in our cooperation.
We are approachable, share our expertise, and offer each other support, even when the duties in question are not our own. In order to take all aspects of projects into consideration, we all work together closely, regardless of our backgrounds.
Have you completed your diploma or master's degree in the field of Electrical Engineering?
Are you familiar with converter systems and their application to control grid infeed units and drive trains and capable of handling common simulation tools? Great! You have already completed vocational training in the field of electrical engineering? Then we are looking forward to meeting you! We offer you the opportunity to enter professional life after your studies and to deepen your theoretical knowledge. You will present your results to your team, our customers, and the community. This is not a problem for you in both English and German.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
Would you like to enhance your project management expertise or delve further into a specific field and take on cross-test bench responsibility? Or are you interested in obtaining a doctorate? With us, you would be responsible for your own promotion, but we offer you support and create the opportunities to make it possible. For example, you can utilize your research results and benefit from our exceptional network. Our Senior Scientists will assist you in choosing a study topic and in writing your doctoral thesis. Plus, in the final year, we also support you by giving you one day off a week. In addition, we promote equal opportunities with a variety of different career programs such as TALENTA for women in science.
Is flexibility important to you?
We have a flextime and core time system, which allows us to be very flexible. Would you like to be able to define your work location flexibly? We offer you the possibility to work from other locations at certain times. After all, even though your work is important to us, we also want you to have time for your family and yourself. To ensure that your children can be looked after in an emergency, we offer help in finding proper emergency care. Are you already worried about the next school holidays? Don't be afraid! Your children will have a great time on our kids' holiday scheme.
