The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy, and science.
Department 3.1, General and Inorganic Chemistry, is looking for a candidate to fill the following position at our Braunschweig site for an initial duration of two years starting on 1 September 2021:
In principle, you will be granted the opportunity to obtain a doctorate. For this purpose, you will be given three years, and your remuneration will correspond to 13 TVöD Bund (85 %).
Within the scope of a European metrological research project, it is planned to develop and metrologically characterize a measurement model for the spectrophotometrical measurement of the pHT value of sea water. This project aims to optimize the ISO 18191:2015 standard. Your work will mainly focus on:
Familiarizing with the measurement of spectrophotometrical pHT measurements of sea water
Formulating the entire mathematical model for the traceable measurement of the pHT value of sea water
Planning and performing primary electrochemical pHT measurements of reference solutions with varying salinity and temperature values
Communicating with the project consortium
Publishing the results in the form of journal articles and conference papers
Participating in drafting a new formulation of the ISO 18191:2015 standard
You have completed your university studies (Master‘s or German Diplom) in natural sciences with a focus on oceanography.
You have knowledge in the fields of sea water chemistry, oceanography, and electrochemistry.
You are familiar with mathematical methods of least squares adjustment.
You have experience with mathematical software programs (preferably MATLAB).
You have a good command of both spoken and written German and English.
You are a team player with excellent communication skills.
You are committed and have an autonomous and well-structured working style.
You are willing to travel within Germany and abroad within the scope of your assignment.
You must be physically fit and ready to travel on a scientific research vessel.
