A postdoc position is available in the Junglen lab, Institute of Virology, Charité Universtitätsmedizin Berlin. The postdoc position focuses on the understanding of epidemic emergence by dissecting the most initial processes and dynamics of infectious disease emergence in rural settings of hotspot regions for virus emergence based on a multi-host and multi-pathogen system. Specifically, arbovirus infection and transmission patterns shall be studied in mosquitoes, livestock and humans under varying ecological and socioeconomic conditions in rural areas at the interface to natural biodiversity hotspots in Uganda in order to identify common patterns and drivers of emerging diseases. The project is conducted in close collaboration with partners from the Ugandan Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and the Makerere University in Uganda.
Your area of responsibility:
Coordinate and manage fieldwork involving collection of mosquitoes and serum samples from livestock and humans in rural areas at the interface to natural biodiversity hotspots in Uganda
Co-supervision of Ugandan PhD students
Transfer of molecular, genetic and serologic detection methods to Uganda
Identify how changes in biodiversity and host community composition influence viral emergence processes using mosquito-associated viruses as a multi-host and multi-pathogen system
Perform genetic and phenotypic characterization of detected viruses and compare them to epidemic virus variants
Scientific project coordination including planning of project meetings and assisting in writing of project reports
Scientific staff is given sufficient time to carry out their own scientific work in accordance with their employment relationship.
Your profile:
Highly qualified and motivated person with a completed PhD in the fields of virology, infectious disease, disease ecology or in a similar area
Practical experience in experimental virology and molecular biology
Strong knowledge of disease ecology, virus evolution and emergence of infectious diseases
Strong experience in sequence analysis and phylogenetics
Experience in High Throughput Sequencing techniques
Outstanding record of research and publications
A strong interest to perform fieldwork under very simple conditions in an absolute basic environment in Uganda
Flexibility, engagement and ability to work within an interdisciplinary multi-national team
Excellent organizational skills, high level of motivation and commitment
Good communication skills and good command of spoken and written English
