The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful supercomputing infrastructures in Europe and makes it available to
researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich, in Germany and throughout Europe. As part of this task JSC conducts various types of Research and
Development, often in close collaboration with local, national and international partner institutions. One of these areas of research is energy
systems modelling, an area in which JSC provides its expertise in order to enable and optimise the use of High-Performance Computing architectures.
Together with researcher from the field of energy systems modelling, applications and algorithms are analysed, adapted, developed and optimized,
which can then make proper use of parallel computing architectures of modern hardware. The aim is to speed up significantly the time-to-solution
as well as the model complexity which can be treated.
We are looking to recruit a
Scientific staff for HPC Application Support in Energy Systems Modelling
You will be part of a small team that is responsible for the analytics of simulation software in energy systems modelling and the support of their developers for code optimisation. Your work will include:
Work in the analysis of simulation-applications in energy systems modelling, in close collaboration with their developers
Identification of optimisation potential, with focus on architecture-specific optimisation strategies aiming at scaling and/or performance improvements
Suggestion of specific implementation strategies and assistance in software adaptations
Benchmarking on hardware prototypes and analysis of results
Presentation/publication of results in collaboration meetings, workshops and conferences
Master in Mathematic-Technical Software Developer (MATSE) or equivalent degree; or university degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics or natural science
Proven experience in parallel programming and the analysis of parallel applications using the paradigms Message-Passing (MPI) and/or OpenMP
Programming experience in at least one the following: C, C++, Fortran
Knowledge in the scripting language Python
Proven background in software development, benchmarking and application optimisation
Firm experience in the usage of Unix-based Operating System
Ability to work independently and in a team of scientists with heterogeneous backgrounds
Firm communication skills in English
Flexibility and willingness to travel
Desirable Knowledge and/or experience
Knowledge in energy systems modelling
Good command of German
Use of software management tools as SVN and Git
Experience in the support of application developers
Good knowledge of computer architecture and understanding of its impact on application performance
