Efficient kilowatt-class diode laser pump modules Reference number 06/18
The FBH is performing research studies into advanced high power diode laser pump modules to support the pumping of future solid state
laser systems. Continuous improvement in optical output power, conversion efficiency, spectral properties and the implementation of
application-specific beam forming are needed. Developments are needed to address growing requirements in conventional and emerging
pump applications, at various emission wavelengths. Novel chip configurations and designs, innovative packaging and optical design are
all necessary to enable performance progress.
A central focus of the studies is the optimization of the opto-mechanical system and diode lasers for pulsed operation at high duty
cycles of more than 10 % in quasi-continuous-wave mode, for pulse widths from < 100 µs to > 100 ms. The research tasks
include optical and mechanical design work that exploits state-of-the-art CAD and simulation tools, and the assembly of fiber-coupled
multi-kilowatt diode laser modules to the highest precision. These studies also include extensive experimental characterization of the
realized diode laser systems to identify and address their limiting factors.
Candidates must have successfully completed their university education (master degree, diploma or equivalent) in the field of physics,
optics or electrical engineering, specializing in lasers, optoelectronics or semiconductor physics. Education and experience in the
fields of diode lasers and their packaging, semiconductor devices or optical resonators are preferred. Diode lasers are fabricated
via a long process chain, so excellent organizational and teamwork skills are essential for the successful completion of the research
tasks. Good understanding of German and English is required, to enable effective research work as part of an international team. It
is possible to use the results from this work as part of studies towards a PhD thesis.
The position is available immediately. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (collective salary scheme for German public service).
