within the project “NewOrder – Understanding the erosion of the traditional knowledge order in scientific online discourse and its impact in times of crisis” located in the Everyday Media Lab.
The Everyday Media Lab examines the use of mobile and social media for knowledge-related purposes, either in professional settings or in everyday life. The project NewOrder is an interdisciplinary project funded by the Leibniz- Association. Together with researchers from Gesis and Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, the project will conduct quantitative studies and computational analyses to examine how the erosion of traditional orders (e. g., preprints vs. peer-reviewed publications) and the blurring of roles in science communication affect trust in science. These effects are studied in context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Your task will be to plan, conduct and analyse experiments and (longitudinal) surveys, present the results on national and international conferences and to publish the findings in international journals. In addition, you will support the administrative management of the lab. Writing your doctoral thesis on a self-generated research question in one of the research areas of the lab is desired and explicitly supported.
Your profile:
  • Experience in planning and conducting experimental research and analyzing data (e. g., surveys, online experiments, longitudinal data)
  • Interest/expertise in computational discourse analysis
  • Interest in science communication, scientific literacy, and trust in science
  • Openness towards Open Science
  • Above average degree (master, diploma, or equivalent) in psychology, communication science, or a related discipline
  • Familiarity with the German media system and German COVID-19 specific channels is an asset
  • Good command of English; knowledge of German is an asset
We offer:
  • Work in an international, cooperative and enthousiastic team
  • A structured PhD programme containing education in methods and soft skills, an inspiring scientific environment and the opportunity for a stay abroad
  • An attractive remuneration based on the collective agreement for the public service in the federal states of Germany (pay group 13 TV-L, 75 %, approx. gross salary p. a.: 1st year EUR 39,000, from 2nd year EUR 42,000), including the social benefits customary in public service
  • Active support for the reconciliation of work and family life, including a subsidy toward the costs of accommodation and care for children of pre-school age, family-friendly working hours, mobile working and occupational health management (OHM)
