About

TIB, being part of the Leibniz Research Association, is with around 600 employees one of the largest technical information centres in Germany, having three main functions:

1.     Acting in the capacity of the Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology, our forward-looking services secure the infrastructural requirements for providing researchers in science and industry with high-quality information and literature.

2.     Carrying out cutting edge research to further expand TIB’s role as a German information centre for the digitisation of science and technology.

3.     Offer library services for the Leibniz University Hannover.

The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) is an infrastructure initiative for German research communities with the aim to harness the potential of research data. Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) has been playing a key role in shaping the NFDI from the very beginning. NFDI4Earth is the NFDI Consortium for Earth System Sciences, which started its operations in October 2021.

The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology – Program Area C, Research and Development, is looking to employ a

Research Software Engineer (m/f/d)

to work in the Data Science & Digital Libraries Research Group (Prof. Dr. Sören Auer) at the next possible date.

The position is initially limited to three years with envisioned extension and possibility to make the position permanent. The regular weekly working time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

Work Areas

Your primary and secondary work areas

  • Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) – Primarily, you will be a member of the ORKG team and drive the development of the ORKG back end, which is written in Kotlin, within the Spring Boot 2 framework, builds on Neo4J and other database systems and exposes content and functionality through a RESTful API.
  • Secondarily, you may support software development and projects in numerous areas, including Research Data Management and the NFDI initiative to establish a national research data infrastructure (e.g. NFDI4Ing, NFDI4DataScience).

Your qualities

Your competence area should be squarely rooted in software engineering or related fields. You should be able to think creatively, grasp new knowledge quickly, be able to design and develop innovative software systems as well as be interested in mastering complex challenges. You will be responsible for developing innovative and mature information services for the TIB stakeholders in Science and Technology.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master or comparable) in a relevant field of study such as computer science or informatics
  • Excellent knowledge of modern programming languages and frameworks (esp. Java, Kotlin, Python, Spring Boot, React), database technologies (esp. graph databases such as Neo4J as well as classical relational databases, in particular PostgreSQL) and software engineering methods (esp. Agile, DevOps, Test Driven Development, etc.)
  • Demonstrated, multi-year experiences with software development in large (industrial) teams (including proficiency with relevant tools such as Git)
  • Familiarity with Semantic Technologies, Knowledge Graphs, Data Management, Human-Computer Interaction, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics or Digital Libraries is an asset
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and excellent communication skills
  • Command of the German language is a plus.
