Full-time / suitable as part-time employment
The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‑prüfung
(BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is
to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and
testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to
improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research
that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus
areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and
analytical sciences.
We are looking for talented people to join us.
Your responsibilities include:
As part of a joint research project between BAM and the Federal Office
for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE), we are devoting
ourselves to the derivation and specification of requirements for
containers for the final disposal of high-level radioactive waste.
Such containers are a key element of any repository that is later to
be built in deep geological formations. Among other things, the
respective host rock with all its properties (rock salt, claystone, or
crystalline rock) plays an important role. Based on the derived
requirements, taking into account internationally already developed or
planned container concepts using different materials, specific test
concepts shall be developed that enable the licensing authority to
carry out a well-founded safety evaluation of the disposal containers
to be developed for Germany. You are responsible for the coordination
and implementation of the research project in cooperation with and
guided by the responsible colleagues from BAM and BASE.
Your specific tasks include:
-
Research and follow-up of the national and international status on
already existing container concepts for the final disposal of
high-level radioactive waste in deep geological formations
-
Quantitative specification of requirements for final disposal
containers
-
Development of test concepts and evaluation procedures for final
disposal containers
-
Application and optimization of the derived test concepts and
evaluation procedures
You present and discuss your results in project meetings and workshops
or conferences and summarize them in interim reports and a
comprehensive final report.
Your qualifications:
-
Successfully completed university studies (diploma/master's degree)
in the field of materials science, mechanical engineering, civil
engineering, geotechnical engineering, geochemistry or similar
-
Wide-ranging basic knowledge in the fields of materials science,
structural mechanics and thermodynamics
-
In-depth knowledge in at least two of the following areas:
Radioactive waste treatment and disposal, corrosion of materials,
rock mechanics or geochemistry, safety assessments and concepts,
materials and component testing, quality assurance
-
Very good spoken and written communication skills in German and
English
-
Excellent communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and
structured way of working, high level of initiative and commitment,
pronounced willingness and ability to make decisions as well as team
spirit and willingness to cooperate

research institutes and industrial companies
- Outstanding facilities and infrastructure
