Research Assistant (PostDoc) – salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

CRC 1265 "Re-Figuration of Spaces" currently has a vacancy for a research associate (100%, postdoc position) in the subproject B03 "Smart People: Queer Everyday Life in Digitalized Spaces" (Prof. Stollmann/Prof. Löw).
The subproject focuses on mediatized actions and spatial productions of queer subcultures as well as urban social movements in South Korea and investigates their conflictual relationship to the normative middle-class and small-family oriented urbanism. The position includes ethnographic fieldwork on the spatial strategies of the LGBTIQ+ scene in the Seoul metropolitan area, secondary analysis of interviews in relation to constructions of othering, and expert interviews with actors of urban social movements on conflictual spatial production.

Working field:
  • Collaboration in the DFG research project "Smart People: queer everyday life in digitalized spaces" within the framework of the SFB 1265 "Refiguration of spaces".
  • The postdoc is in charge of the design of the survey instruments, the implementation of the data collection as well as the following data analysis.
  • Together with the project management, she/he ensures the successful implementation of the research design in terms of organization and content.
  • This includes a spatial ethnography in LGBTQI+ scenes and right-to-the-city movements in South Korea (virtual and on-site), guided interviews with protagonists*, image analysis, creation of Joint Spatial Displays.
  • The project bines bodies of knowledge from sociology and urbanism.
  • The postdoc coordinates the interdisciplinary consolidation of the results in the project process.
  • She/he coordinates the field access and contributes significantly to the writing of scientific publications.
  • Active participation in the SFB on-site program in Berlin is required.
Requirements:
  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) and PhD in the fields of social sciences, planning or engineering.
  • Knowledge of queer studies and gender studies publications.
  • Experience in the use of qualitative methods.
  • Very good Korean language skills, good German or English language skills (supporting documents required). If proficiency in German is not available, participation in language training to understand German communication is expected.
Desired skills:
  • Background knowledge of spatial sociology, architecture and urban design, and architectural performance skills are desired.
