To strengthen our team in the division
“Non-destructive Testing Methods for Civil Engineering” in Berlin-Steglitz, starting as soon as possible, we are looking for a
Research assistant (m/f/d) in the field of civil engineering, physical engineering, mechanical engineering or cf.
Salary group 13 TVöD
Temporary contract until 31.07.2024
Full-time / suitable as part-time employment
The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‑prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.
We are looking for talented people to join us.
Your responsibilities include:
The position offers you the outstanding opportunity to transfer the latest scientific findings into practice – together with partners from industry and research. Subject to the availability of funds, an extension of the job to a total of 36 months is envisaged to provide the opportunity for a doctorate.
The project:
Using ageing infrastructure sustainably! The transport infrastructure in Germany and worldwide is suffering from increasing traffic loads and a continuous ageing of the built environment. When assessing load-bearing structures such as bridges, additional information about the structure can be acquired at a certain cost through in-depth examinations and inspections. This information is used for the targeted refinement of calculation models and enables more realistic, validated assessments of infrastructure structures. The aim of the "ZfPStatik" project is the first development of a set of rules for the assessment of existing structures on the basis of information collected using non-destructive testing methods on the structure. The joint project is coordinated by BAM. BAM's scientific activities in the project primarily include the further development, validation and application of the non-destructive testing methods.
- You will ensure that the metrological work in the project is carried out on time and to the required quality.
- You will develop the innovative interface between the computational assessment and the non-destructive testing of the structures together with the collaborative partners and coordinate the cooperation.
- You will model the non-destructive testing methods to calculate measurement uncertainties and quantify uncertainty components that influence the measurement results.
- For this purpose, you will design test specimens, plan test series, carry out the measurements and evaluate them – both in the laboratory and on the building structure
- To maximise the benefit of the measurement results for future construction and planning practice, you will conceptualize a data base structure – this will be used, among other things, to assess the suitability of various test methods, process strengths and weaknesses
- You will define new strategies for NDT-compliant modelling of the supporting structures (e.g. finite element modelling) in close coordination with the engineering offices involved.
- You prepare the project-related content developed by you and by the group for project meetings and committee meetings and support the implementation of the meetings.
Your qualifications:
- Successfully completed scientific university studies (master's degree or diploma) in civil engineering, physical engineering, mechanical engineering or similar.
- You have a strong understanding of safety and reliability concepts in civil engineering or other engineering disciplines.
- You have good knowledge in the areas of measurement technology, measurement data evaluation, signal processing and mathematics as well as (initial) programming experience (Python or similar).
- Experience in the use of software for FE modelling of structures and expertise in static calculations are desirable.
- The use of common EDP programs (Microsoft Office and/or LaTeX, etc.) is a matter of course for you.
- You are characterised by a logical way of thinking, perseverance and curiosity. You enjoy familiarising yourself with new topics and deepening your existing knowledge.
- You are prepared to undertake national and sometimes international business trips lasting several days.
- You have excellent verbal and written communication skills in both German and English.
- The ability to work in a team but also independently as well as organisational skills round off your profile.
We offer:
- Interdisciplinary research at the interface of politics, economics and society
- Work in national and international networks with universities, research institutes and industrial companies
- Outstanding facilities and infrastructure
- Flexible working hours and mobile working
