Technische Universität BerlinBerlin
Technische Universität Berlin offers an open position:
Research Assistant (PostDoc) - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen
Modeling microbial ecology of surface water systems
part-time employment may be possible
Faculty III – Institute of Environmental Technology / Water Quality Engineering Reference number: III-843/19 (starting at the earliest possible / until 31 August 2021; an extension up to a total of 33 months is envisaged under the reserve that funds are granted / closing date for applications 06/01/20)
Working field: This position is part of two research projects in the area of modeling microbes in surface water systems. The first project focuses on Microcystis growth and toxin production in Lake Erie (USA). The aim is to implement an existing lab-scale, gene-level agent-based model (ABM) at the field scale, compare to field observations (e.g. gene transcript levels, microcystin concentrations) and then develop predictions. The second project focuses on phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria interaction (cross-feeding) at Bermuda (Atlantic Ocean). The aim is to apply an existing model inference tool (mechanistic microbial ecosystem model inference, MMEMI) to time series data to explore the interaction of specific phytoplankton and bacteria, via specific dissolved organic matter (DOM) molecules (i.e. who produces what and who eats what). Both projects are part of larger international, multi-disciplinary collaborations that include laboratory and field work to support the model development. Duties include setting up existing in-house modeling software programs, modifying/extending as needed, applying to the specific systems and questions, and disseminating the results (oral and poster presentations, journal papers). The project location is Berlin, incl. expected participation at project meetings in the USA.
Requirements: Successfully completed university degree (Diplom, Master or equivalent) and doctoral/PhD degree in Environmental Sciences or Engineering with a focus on microbial surface water quality, mathematical modeling or a related field, experience in the development and/or application of water quality and/or other environmental models. Desired qualifications: Quantitative ability, programming skills, academic aptitude, scientific interest. Good command of German and/or English required; the willingness to learn either English or German is expected.
Please address enquiries to Prof. Dr. Ferdi Hellweger (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Please send your written application with the reference number and the usual documents (in particular letter of motivation, CV/Resume, course work transcripts (BS, MS, PhD), 2 sample publications (eg articles, thesis), 2 references, 1 letter of recommendation (preferably from a professor)) to Technische Universität Berlin – Der Präsident – Fakultät III, Institut für Technischen Umweltschutz, Prof. Dr. Hellweger, Sekr. KF 4, Straße des 17. Juni 135, 10623 Berlin or by e-mail to email@example.com.
