of Technology (BTU) Cottbus-Senftenberg, invites applications for a
Professorship (W3) Synthetic Microbiology
commencing at the earliest opportunity.
The Institute of Biotechnology at the newly established Brandenburg University of
Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg has an immediate opening for a professorship
in Synthetic Microbiology.
The field of biotechnology is one of the main future research priorities of the
Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, which has been
supported in the past by numerous national and international collaborations in
the fields of „applied microbiology and enzyme technology“ and „molecular and
cell-based medical diagnostics and regenerative therapy“.
We are seeking a candidate who can strengthen the field of industrial biotechnology
at the institute and in particular, who can collaborate with the existing research
groups in the field of metabolic engineering. The aim of this genome-based
research should focus on the specific design of metabolic characteristics of microorganisms
including their development and optimization through to production
strains, for example in the context of carbon (dioxide) metabolism, biogenic
energy production or the production of fine chemicals including new pharmacologically
In addition to pursuing innovative and independent research in a multidisciplinary
environment, the candidate is expected to successfully achieve long-term external
funding from public and private project funding. DFG funding to strengthen the
DFG-Research at the University are particularly welcome.
The scope of teaching will include undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs,
as well as cross-faculty and institutional projects. We are looking for
an individual who will take on teaching in General Microbiology. The teaching
should be given in English and German. Participation in the development of
teaching and research concepts as well as the university’s self-administration
The candidate should be internationally recognized for having done several years
of post-doctoral scientific work in synthetic biology or a related field.
He or she should display originality and autonomy in research activities, while
combining management responsibilities with an ability to work in a multidisciplinary

The Institute of Biotechnology is situated along with its laboratories on the Senftenberg
campus and is in close proximity to the city’s Innovation Center. The
majority of teaching thus takes place in Senftenberg, but this requires cooperation
with institutions in Cottbus as well as the involvement of the university
administration as well as spatial flexibility.

Experience in the acquisition and realization of third-party funded projects is
expected. Fields of research should be relevant for DFG (German Research
Foundation) funding. Lectures are primarily to be held in German, fluency in
English is expected.
