Professorship (W3) of African Legal Studies
The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching.
The Faculty of Law, Business & Economics at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a
Full Professor of African Legal Studies
pay grade W 3 (minimum salary per year: 84546.14 €), to commence 1 September 2019. This is a permanent civil service position. Additional salary
components will be negotiated separately.
The applicant should address the field of African Legal Studies in research and teaching in collaboration with the Institute for African Studies (IAS).
One emphasis should concern comparative and interdisciplinary work on issues arising from the context of existing legal orders in Africa, regional
integration with a focus on Africa, or baseline legal perspectives on Africa. Knowledge of a common law legal system with a focus on economic- /
business-related and/or private legal relations is required. Furthermore, knowledge of another legal discipline, for example of a basic legal
discipline (e.g. legal pluralism, legal anthropology, sociology of law, legal theory, comparative law), of international or transnational law would be an asset.
The applicant should also have an interest in the aspects of legal and economic studies that are unique to Bayreuth and should be willing to get involved in
African studies at the University of Bayreuth as well as in the subjects culture and society in Africa, ethnology, and geographic development research in Africa.
We are looking for applicants who have received a substantial part of their scientific qualifications in the African and / or Anglo-American scientific community
and speak English as their mother tongue or have excellent English language proficiency and teaching experience in English, preferably acquired in Anglophone
countries. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the legal curriculum of courses held in English; participation in the programs and fields
of legal specialization taught at the University of Bayreuth is equally expected. French language proficiency is an asset. A commitment to the University of
Bayreuth’s interdisciplinary programs of study and research projects is particularly welcome. Willingness to procure external funding and to be actively
involved in the bodies of academic self-administration is expected.
In addition to the general administrative requirements, prerequisites for this position are (according to the BayHSchPG Article 7 and Article 10 para 3) a
university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation).
Alternatively evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment will also be considered.
A further prerequisite is the ability to teach in English. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).
