combined with the position as Management Director of the Division "Materials Science" within the Leibniz Institute for Materials Engineering
The University of Bremen and the Leibniz Institute for Materials Engineering - IWT work jointly in the fields of education and research. The IWT - in
legal ownership of the Foundation of the AWT, the German Heat Treatment and Materials Engineering Association (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wärmebehandlung und
Werkstofftechnik) and of the Federal State of Bremen - is an institute of the Leibniz Association, whose 93 research institutions in all scientific fields
are jointly funded by the federal and state governments. IWT encompasses three institute divisions: Manufacturing Technologies, Process Engineering and
Materials Science. The directors of the institute divisions are at the same time full professors in the Faculty of Production Engineering of the University
(acc. to Berlin model). Furthermore, leadership of the Materials Science institute is associated with the management of the Bremen Institute for Materials
Testing (Amtliche Materialprüfungsanstalt Bremen - MPA).
A strong research personality is sought from the area of Materials Science with a focus on metallic structural materials.
The holder of this post shall carry out teaching in the Bachelor and Master programs in the Faculty of Production Engineering for the studies held in English and German in Production Engineering, Systems Engineering as well as Industrial Engineering & Management in the area of Materials Science, with a particular focus on metals.
In the area of research, the focus is on metallic structural materials and the treatment thereof for the production of semi-finished goods and components. Of primary importance
here are new alloys, material compounds, the characterization of material properties and the numeric simulation of microstructure formation as well as production and heat treatment processes.
Relevant experience in project-funded research at national, European and international level as well as in collaborating with industrial companies is required. During research activities as Director of the IWT, a knowledge and application-
oriented research is expected in close cooperation with the two other Institute divisions of Manufacturing Technologies
and Process Engineering.
It is expected that the applicant shall provide significant impetus for the further scientific development and organization
of the named areas. Furthermore, the applicant should participate - significantly and with project ideas - in the ongoing Collaborative Research Centers "Process Signatures"
(Prozesssignaturen) (SFB/TR136) and "Farbige Zustände" (SFB 1232) as well as in the MAPEX Center for Materials and Processes of the University of Bremen.
The conditions governing the appointment to this position include an outstanding PhD (dissertation) as well as postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) or equivalent scientific achievements, which can also be obtained outside of the university sector. Furthermore, pedagogic and didactic suitability, social skills and the ability to lead employees in an expert organization are essential. A readiness to work together in a cooperative and interdisciplinary way with adjacent fields of expertise and faculties as well as industrial research associations is required. Besides proven research experience, experience of industrial practice would also be preferable.
