The Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences (IBU) in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oldenburg seeks to appoint a
W2 Professor (m/f/d)
Migration Ecology
as soon as possible.
The professor will study animal navigation in an ecological context. Possible research foci include the behavioural, sensory, ecological, molecular and/or genetic mechanisms that enable animals to navigate over long geographical distances. The candidate must contribute to the institute’s key research area “Orientation and Navigation in Vertebrates”. Candidates with a proven track record in working with key aspects of navigation in vertebrates will therefore be preferred. However, candidates with a background in insect navigation and ecology (of migratory insects) may also be considered.
The new professorship is also important for the development and future success of the coordinated research programmes in the field of Animal Navigation/Neurosensorics. A central contribution to SFB 1372: "Magnetoreception and Navigation in Vertebrates“ is essential. Additional involvement in other coordinated research programmes of the IBU is desirable.
Research areas compatible with the IBU’s future concept may include:
- Migration ecology
- Understanding of migration/navigation in the context of "genes to senses to ecosystems“
- Sensory ecology related to migration and navigation
- Tracking of migrating animals with the purpose of understanding their navigation mechanisms and/or strategies
- Other experimental approaches to understanding animal migration and navigation in an ecological context
The professor will represent the field of animal ecology in teaching. This involves several basic animal ecology courses in the bachelor’s programmes in biology and environmental sciences as well as advanced animal ecology courses in the master’s programmes in landscape ecology and biology.
Applicants must fulfil the formal criteria according to § 25 NHG. To increase the proportion of women in science, equally qualified female candidates will be given preference. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification. The position is suitable for part-time employment. The university actively promotes the compatibility of family, work, and private life. The School supports newly appointed professors by offering special coaching programmes.
Please send your application as a single PDF file including the usual documentation (cover letter, CV, publication list, list of third-party funding acquired and courses taught, a description of your scientific career, as well as copies of relevant certificates) by
