Reference No.: 44/2018

Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences offers a range of engineering, economics, health and human sciences courses to over 6,200 students across two sites. As a family-friendly university on a green campus that is one of the loveliest in Germany, we offer attractive working conditions. Magdeburg, the City on the Elbe and once an imperial residence, has always appealed to creative minds from the sciences, culture and politics. This is equally true of our second location: the Hanseatic town of Stendal, the birthplace of Winckelmann and the capital of Brick Gothic.
Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences is seeking to fill, by 01.08.2019, the following post in the Department of Water, Environment, Civil Engineering and Safety:

W2 Professorship in Environmental
Chemistry

The chair is responsible for the teaching and research aspects of the subject of chemistry within the context of the focal areas of the Department of Water, Environment, Civil Engineering and Safety. We are seeking a teacher with proven academic and practical experience, who preferably will demonstrate proficiency and achievements in several of the following subject areas:
  • Hydrochemistry and waste chemistry:
    • Aquatic chemistry (e.g. chemistry of solutions, biochemical processes, chemical reactions in bodies of water and sewage, testing methods) esp. analysis and evaluation of the environmental behaviour of inorganic and organic substances in water, as well as the chemical evaluation of bodies of surface and ground water in accordance with the WFD
    • Environmental chemistry (e.g. deposition and degradation of harmful substances, material cycles, environmental pollution) esp. chemical processes in the thermal and biological treatment of waste and secondary raw materials
  • Construction materials chemistry, esp. plastics
    • Construction chemistry (e.g. chemical reactions of construction materials, composite materials, material testing methods)
    • Plastics (e.g. properties, recycling, behaviour in the environment, plastics from renewable raw materials)
Applicants are expected to hold a university degree plus an above-average doctorate in the subject of chemistry or chemical process engineering, plus relevant practical experience in the field of analytical chemistry including outside of the research area.
With regard to teaching, the chair is primarily involved in the Bachelor’s and Master's programmes in Civil Engineering, Water Management, and Recycling and Waste Management in the Department of Water, Environment, Civil Engineering and Safety. When required, the post holder should also be capable of taking responsibility for the competent, practically-oriented teaching of adjacent subject areas.
A requirement of the post is a readiness to deliver courses in the English language, which may also be held in blocks at foreign partner universities. Alongside a strong commitment to teaching, active involvement in the acquisition of third-party funding and interdisciplinary technical cooperation are also expected.
General Conditions of Employment:
The conditions of employment for professors are contained in § 35 of the Higher Education Act of Saxony-Anhalt (HSG LSA) dated 05.05.2004 and most recently amended by the Act Amending the Provisions of Higher Education Law dated 26.07.2010 (official gazette 19/2010).
The ability to conduct scientific work must have been demonstrated by the conferral of a doctorate. In particular, for professors in universities of applied sciences, it is the case that in accordance with § 35 para. 2 no. 4b (HSG LSA), specific achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods must have been demonstrated in professional practice of several years' duration, of which at least three years must have been outside the higher education sphere. Remuneration is in accordance with W2 of Remuneration Order W from the Act Reforming Remuneration Law in the State of Saxony-Anhalt (BesNeuRG LSA, official gazette 04/2011) as amended.
A further requirement is that professors should be prepared to take on teaching responsibilities in their subject area on other courses at the university. A commitment to technology and knowledge transfer and university self-governance is also expected. Professors should be prepared to reside within the university’s catchment area.
Subject to fulfilment of the requirements, the successful candidate would be appointed to the rank of civil servant with unlimited tenure or alternatively to an unlimited employment relationship under private law, in accordance with § 38 para. 1 line 9 HSG LSA.

It is seeking to increase the proportion of women among its scientific personnel and therefore expressly encourages qualified women to apply. In the event of equal professional suitability and achievements, severely disabled persons take precedence over applicants who are not granted preferential status by law.
