The Department of Social & Cultural Anthropology at the Faculty of Philosophy and History at
Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, Germany, invites applications for
the following position, starting as soon as possible:
Professorship (W1, tenure track) of Social & Cultural
Anthropology (Ethnologie)
The initial tenure track appointment as Assistant Professor is for six years (§ 64 of the Higher
Education Act of the State of Hessen (HHG)) with a midterm evaluation. Upon positive tenure
track evaluation, the incumbent will be promoted to a permanent position at a higher level (W2).
The teaching load of the professorship (W1) is reduced to four hours per week in order to
promote the candidate’s further qualification, after conversion into a professorship (W2) eight
teaching hours per week.
For applications to be considered, candidates are expected to cover the main areas of Social &
Cultural Anthropology in teaching and to have relevant research experience in at least one of
these areas. Further expected is regional expertise based on fieldwork in Africa; experience in
teaching and in procuring third-party funds; excellent publications; international visibility; the
willingness to participate in the Institute’s research activities and its academic
self-administration; and the ability to work in a team.
A further requirement for application is a dissertation in Cultural & Social Anthroplogy
(Ethnologie).
According to § 64 HHG persons that obtained their PhD at Goethe University Frankfurt are not
eligible to the position. The doctorate should not date back to more than four years and should
be complemented by further scientific achievements. The initial designated salary for the
position is based on "W1" on the German university scale or equivalent.
