The Professor of the Chair of Heritage and Technology (H&T) will focus primarily on the analysis, diagnosis, technical (re)design of, and interventions in existing buildings and structures. Its domain will be the consolidation, conservation, maintenance and revitalisation of existing structures, incorporating knowledge of building history and the built heritage, material sciences, structural mechanics and building physics.
The chairholder will develop and convey knowledge, theory, methodology, process and practice of technical interventions in heritage structures. In its work, the Chair needs to face an international challenge: students, Dutch and non-Dutch alike, will be educated for an international practice, and research is undertaken with an international dimension; the Chair needs to take this into consideration.
The chairholder of H&T is expected to advance the area of building technology in relation to heritage, responding to urgent issues in science and society (design for sustainability, for circularity, conservation and maintenance), and to demands from international heritage institutions.
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
academic education in a relevant area;
experience in research, demonstrable by a doctoral degree, a research track record and publications;
outstanding teaching abilities;
demonstrable affinity with themes for research and education in the field of heritage and architecture;
active position in practice and demonstrable expertise in the field of built heritage and building technology;
strong network of contacts in the world of built heritage and building technology;
demonstrable capability to acquire funding for research projects;
strong abilities in leadership and management;
cooperative attitude and good social skills, team player;
good skills in spoken and written communication, in English and (if necessary) willingness to learn Dutch.
For this position, the TU Delft is searching for a candidate who will combine, in equal balance, a scientific background with knowledge and excellent experience from practice. Within the domain of built heritage the candidate has a background in academic technical research, combined with additional expertise and broad experience in (technical) design or consultancy in practice, and/or a background in technical design or consultancy practice combined with profound additional expertise in (academic) technical research.
The candidate can be an engineer, a technical designer or technical consultant with experience in conservation, refurbishment and transformation of built heritage. The candidate can also be a historical surveyor or heritage academic with broad technical knowledge and practical experience in design-related processes.
The candidate must contribute to research and education by connecting academic knowledge and attitude with practical experience in a design-related field of work. Essential is a broad and cross-disciplinary knowledge of building history, heritage conservation and adaptive reuse design, building technsology and sustainability.

Architecture and the Built Environment
The Department of Architectural Engineering + Technology provides education and performs scientific research in the field of building technology related to building design. It positions itself as an important player in the integration of design and engineering. The main core areas of interest are façade design, structural design, climate design and computational design with an important focus on sustainability.
The section Heritage and Architecture focuses ons the design projects of the built heritage and is responsible for research and education in restoration and transformation of existing cultural heritage, from conservation techniques to interventions in architecture and its surroundings. In all design projects in an existing context, the past plays a more or less important role.
The section has three interrelated chairs, each with its own specific area of expertise: Heritage and Technology, Heritage and Design, and Heritage and Cultural Value.
