The University of Zurich invites applications for a
professorship in social and cultural anthropology (open rank)
starting on 1 August 2025.The position is connected with the directorship of the Ethnographic Museum. Depending on the qualifications of the appointee, the professorship will take the form of a chair or a tenure-track assistant professorship.
Candidates are expected to have an outstanding academic record in teaching and research in the field of material culture and museum studies, ideally with leadership experience in an ethnographic museum. Candidates should have a regional specialization that perfectly complements the current regional focus on Asia at the division of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies (ISEK). They will teach introductory as well as regionally and thematically focused courses at BA, MA and PhD level. We expect the successful candidate to provide innovative impulses for the subject and to cooperate in research and teaching with other professorships at the department, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as well as with national and international museums and institutions.
Candidates must hold a PhD degree at the time of application and have an excellent record of academic achievements in the relevant field. Teaching is carried out in German and English. Non-German speaking candidates are expected to acquire a working knowledge of German within the first three years of their appointment. The University of Zurich is an equal opportunities employer.
