for the Promotion of Young Scientists, the Faculty of Social
Sciences (FB 08) invites applications for the following
Tenure-Track-Professorship (W1 with Tenure-Track W2)
in Cultural Studies/Cultural History of Eastern and
Eastern Central Europe

The appointment is initially for three years. After an interim
advisory review, the appointment will be extended for another
three years. Pending on a positive performance evaluation
after a maximum of six years, the appointment will become
tenured with a lifetime civil-service position (W2). In order to
allow the junior professors to develop their research profile,
the tenure-track phase has reduced teaching obligations.
Teaching and research will be at the Institute of European-
Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The university is
seeking for a young researcher who has already acquired
some experience in independent research and academic
teaching and promises to become a leading scholar in his
field in a national and international context.
The university expects a clear focus on research in
East-European and/or EastCentral European cultures and/or
literatures of the 20. century with an additional focus on
culture and memory in Eastern/Eastern Central Europe.
The teaching obligations will concern a broad range of
European cultural studies. Teaching will be in German and
English. The future holder of the position is expected to
participate in teaching in BA and MA programmes at the
Faculty of Social Sciences, in particular in the BA-programme
Integrated European Studies. There is a particular focus
on participation in collaborative projects in social sciences.
The future holder of the position will also participate in the
conception and organisation of joint research projects at the
Faculty. A closer cooperation with the Research Centre for
East European Studies (Forschungsstelle Osteuropa - FSO)
can be taken into consideration.

Applicants are required to hold a university degree in a
related subject, an outstanding PhD degree completed within
five years prior to application. Experience in teaching at a
higher educational institution is expected. Further scientific
achievements, integration in international networks, and
proofs of pedagogical aptitude as well as communication
skills and willingness to participate in didactic training are an
advantage. Non-German-speaking applicants should be
prepared to learn the language and teach in German after
two to three years.
Teaching in Russian/Polish is equally welcomed.
The appointment follows the regulations of § 18a BremHG as
well as § 117 BremBG. Candidates holding a PhD degree from
the University of Bremen may only apply if they are no longer
employed at the University or if they had been employed
outside of the University of Bremen for at least two years.
