At the University of Bremen the Institute of Sociology in the
Department of Social Sciences invites applications for the

If the general requirements of civil service law are met, the
candidate will be granted civil servant status for life.
We are looking for an internationally recognized personality
who represents this field in teaching and research. The
person to be appointed should have broad knowledge in
social theory and theory of societies from classical thinkers
to current debates, and also apply these theories (in particular
theory of societies) to their own empirical research.
Preferably, this research focuses on social change and/or
integration in contemporary societies.
The research focus of the person to be appointed is expected
to be compatible with the core subjects of the SOCIUM
Research Center on Inequality and Social Policy. A strong
interest in cooperation is expected.
Teaching obligations include primarily the Bachelor's and
Master's programs in sociology and related subjects of the
department. Participation in graduate training at BIGSSS is
also desirable. Teaching courses in German language is
obligatory right from the beginning. Applicants should also
be willing to offer courses in English and should be prepared
to support the concept of „research-based learning“. The
use of media-supported forms of teaching and learning is
desirable. Furthermore, experience in taking the genderperspective into account in research and teaching is desirable.
In addition to a pleasant, cooperative working atmosphere,
the University of Bremen offers a lively, productive and
internationally visible environment in its research focus of
social change, social policy and the state, and thus enables
diverse internal and interdisciplinary collaborations. The
person to be appointed must have international scientific
experience and is expected to have actively participated in
internationally visible research and international networking
as well as in the acquisition and implementation of thirdparty funded projects. We expect participation in ongoing
collaborative social science research initiatives within the
framework of a well-established culture of interdisciplinary
cooperation in the field of social inequality and welfare
statehood.
Prerequisites for recruitment are an appropriate academic
degree, a relevant and outstanding dissertation as well as
further academic achievements (habilitation-equivalent),
which may also have been achieved outside of the higher
education sector. The additional achievements must be
documented by a habilitation or equivalent achievements, for
example within the framework of a junior/assistant professorship. Moreover, applicants are expected to participate in
further training in higher education didactics. Applicants'
pedagogical ability is a required condition and must be documented by appropriate experience in university teaching.
The appointment is based on Section 18 of the Bremen
Higher Education Act (Bremisches Hochschulgesetz) and
Section 116 of the Bremen Civil Service Act (Bremisches
Beamtengesetz).
