The Medical Faculty of the University of Basel invites applications for the position of
Professor of Sport Pedagogy and Health Development
At the end of December 2023, the professorship of sports science will become vacant due to the retirement of the incumbent. The professorship is part of the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health (DSBG) at the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel. The DSBG focuses on research, teaching and services in the area of "Exercise, sport and health across the lifespan". It examines from different perspectives how exercise and sport affect physical and mental health in different phases of life.
Your position
The professorship will further develop the DSBG's orientation on health by focusing on "Sport Pedagogy and Health Development". This includes, for example, promoting participation in exercise and sport among children and young people, physical education oriented research in terms of the quality of teaching and learning in sport, the effects of physical activity on cognition, and exercise and sport in development work. A focus on other/new topics is possible. The professorship is expected to implement translational projects (from the laboratory to the general public) and thus make a contribution to health promotion in the society. With his/her teaching activities in German, the professorship will make a substantial contribution to the curriculum of the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs (focus on sport and health pedagogy, theories of education, humanities and cultural studies). The professorship will actively participate in the department management, as well as in the academic governance on all levels.
Your profile
You have acquired a degree in exercise or sports science. You possess excellent scientific qualifications, backed by international peer-reviewed publications as well as successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding. You have gained experience in teaching at a university. You can draw on an established network in research and have experience in designing and leading interdisciplinary research projects while contributing to the career development of young scholars. In research, you primarily pursue an empirical-quantitative approach and have already worked successfully with educational and health-related organisations/institutions. An ability to connect to the work and research priorities of the DSBG is desirable. Good German language skills are expected.
We offer you
  • An innovative, interdisciplinary and open research environment
  • A responsible leadership role
  • Attractive university facilities for research and teaching
The University of Basel stands for excellence through diversity and is committed to equal opportunities and family friendliness. In an effort to increase the proportion of women in professorships, the university is particularly interested in receiving applications from women.
