to begin as soon as possible. This position is a W2 fixed-term position (6 years) with tenure track to a tenured W3 position (Associate Professor) or a tenured W3 (Associate) position.
The professorship belongs to the TUM School of Education (EDU) and is affiliated with the TUM Department of Physics. EDU is one of Germany's most innovative institutions for teacher education and educational research. We offer bachelor's and master's programs for pre-service teachers in vocational schools and secondary schools (“Gymnasium”). We cooperate with most departments of the Technical University of Munich and collaborate with a vast network of schools in the Munich area. EDU as well as the Department of Physics provide an excellent study environment at the cutting edge of scientific research and hands-on experience. The Department of Physics is one of the internationally most renowned physics departments.
The responsibilities include research and teaching as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. We seek to appoint an expert in the research area of physics education with an empirical and quantitative focus. The teaching load includes courses in the university's bachelor and master programs explicitly in the educational teaching of future physics teachers on the basis of different teaching methods. The candidate is expected in particular to develop an internationally visible science profile in physics education, which takes into account recent developments in physics, education, and society as well as the quality of teaching in schools. The candidate should represent responsibly the full breadth of the subject matter of physics education, and should participate in teaching activities concerning the interdisciplinary aspects of physics education, and the preparation and support of training programs in schools. Furthermore the candidate is expected to take part in the development and implementation of a concept for science and teaching, which supports the contents and methods within physics education for vocational and secondary teacher education.
We are looking for candidates with advanced scientific experience, proven by achievements in research and teaching at the highest international standards, according to the relevant career level. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification as well as pedagogical aptitude, including the ability to teach in English, are also prerequisites. Substantial research experience abroad is expected. The acquisition of a qualification, which is demanded for physics education in schools, and teaching experience in schools or another comparable educational institution for three years should be proven. The candidate should be able to lead cooperative research projects based on external funding and to develop a strategic teaching approach. Candidates with experience in attracting external funding are particularly welcome.
Based on best international standards and transparent performance criteria, TUM offers a merit-based academic career option for tenure track faculty from Assistant Professor through a permanent position as Associate Professor, and on to Full Professor.
