Postdoctoral Position in Chemical Biology / Structural Biology (f/m/d)

The start date is February 1st, 2021 or by agreement. The position is available for up to five years.
The position is available as part of a project investigating the structural principles of writing and reading synthetic genetic polymers, so-called xenonucleic acids (XNAs). In brief, synthetic genetics aims to expand nucleic acids to new non-natural genetic polymers called xeno „nucleic acids (XNA)“TUM to foster advances in many areas like long-term data storage, biotechnology, diagnostics and medicine. Key for XNA-based applications are enzymatic „machines“ for XNA recording (XNA polymerases) and reading (XNA reverse transcriptases). Structural insights into these processes would provide highly valuable insights leading to major advances. However, important structures are lacking. Thus, the aim of this project is the first time elucidation of the structural basis for enzymatic recording and reading of XNA. Thereby we will build on our past success in the structural elucidation of the interplay of DNA polymerases with synthetic substrates.

The research has a strong interdisciplinary focus working at the interface between biology and chemistry. The working language is English.
Cloning, expression and purification of mutated DNA polymerases
Crystallization of mutated DNA polymerases in complex with various XNA substrates
Data collection & structure elucidation
PhD degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biotechnology related with outstanding results
Documented experience in X-ray crystallography of protein complexes, preferentially in the field of enzymes interacting with nucleic acids
Creativity and initiative to successfully achieve goals in a team
Enthusiasm for science at the interface of Chemistry and Biology
Strong written and oral communication skills in English language
