Post-doctoral /science programmers in the area of
modelling regional/global terrestrial ecosystem dynamics and
regional vegetation-atmosphere interactions
Land-use change and climate change impact on ecosystems multiple ways, and ecosystem processes feedback to
climate, but also to socio-economic processes in the land-use system. Yet our modelling skills in how the
corresponding biotic, abiotic and social processes interact is still poor.
We seek post-doctoral researchers/science programmers to improve on some key issues, who will contribute to
1) further develop model code of the dynamic vegetation model LPJ-GUESS, for instance related to cropprocesses,
seasonal vegetation dynamics (C allocation), and/or model coupling to a multi-trophic functional diversity
model (Madingley); 2) develop coupling of LPG-GUESS and the regional climate model WRF
Tasks will also include to
apply the newly developed model globally and regionally;
assess model performance against suitable observations;
perform uncertainty analyses;
contribute some amount of time to broader duties, such as project reporting and teaching.
The work will be done in close collaboration with groups world-wide, especially in Sweden and the UK, but also in
Israel and Kenya.
The candidates must demonstrate advanced knowledge in programming such as in C++, and must have proven
experience in simulations on Linux clusters. A degree in a quantitative environmental sciences discipline, for instance
meteorology, environmental physics, or plant ecophysiology is required. Knowledge about soil and vegetation
processes is a clear advantage. Candidates also needs to be familiar with processing large-scale model input and
output. Excellent oral and written skills in English are prerequisite.
A vibrant and friendly, international research environment in the beautiful surroundings of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany (http://www.imk-ifu.kit.edu/institute.php). The salary will be equivalent to the public service
TV-L EG13, depending on qualifications and experience. The appointment will be for 2 years, expected to start
around summer 2018; extension beyond 2 years is possible, but depends on performance as well as the availability
