Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH)Berlin
The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH) within the Forschungsverbund
Berlin e. V., is a leading international research institute that studies diode lasers, LEDs and microwave devices. On
the basis of III/V semiconductors, it researches and implements components and systems for applications in communications,
traffic and production technology, medicine and biotechnology. It covers the entire value chain from design to ready-for-delivery
systems. For more details, visit: www.fbh-berlin.com
For our High Power Diode Lasers Lab in the research area Photonics we are looking for two
PhD students (m/f)
Brilliant, efficient broad-area lasers (Reference number 16/17)
The two positions are focused on the following areas:
Research studies into near infra-red diode lasers with the best possible beam properties, based on the use of novel chip configurations and designs, in cooperation with FBH experts in wafer processing and device characterization
Research studies into near infra-red diode lasers with the best possible conversion efficiency, based on the use of novel epitaxial layer structures and optical resonators, in cooperation with FBH experts in wafer growth and simulation
A central focus of the studies is the optimization of diode lasers for high-power continuous-wave operation, where many non-linear
effects arise. In both cases, the research tasks include design work that exploits state-of-the-art simulation tools and also extensive
experimental characterization of the realized diode lasers to identify and address their limiting factors. The studies will take place
in close cooperation with the Berlin subsidiary of TRUMPF Laser GmbH.
Candidates must have successfully completed their university education in natural sciences (masters degree, diploma or equivalent)
in the field of physics or electrical engineering, specializing in lasers, optoelectronics, or semiconductor physics. Education
and experience in the fields of diode lasers, semiconductor devices or optical resonators are preferred. Diode lasers are fabricated
via a long process chain, so excellent organizational and teamwork skills are essential for the successful completion of the
research tasks. Good understanding of German and English is required, to enable effective research work as part of an international team.
The position is available immediately. Payment is according to TVöD (collective salary scheme for German public service).
The appointment is initially limited in time to 2 years. FBH is an equal-opportunity employer. Female candidates are encouraged
to apply. Among equally qualified applicants preference will be given to handicapped candidates.
Please submit your application as soon as possible, but no later than November 30, 2017, indicating the above reference number, to
