PhD Student Position in Surface Science
in Halle (Saale)
Oxide quasicrystals have been fabricated from ultrathin oxide films on metal support so far. Within the framework of a PhD thesis the aim is to study for the first time the inverted system, i.e. well-defined single crystalline metal islands on oxide support. It is expected that upon annealing, the metal islands will be encapsulated by a monoatomic quasicrystalline layer. The process of encapsulation and structure formation will be investigated using microscopic methods on different length scales (STM, PEEM), diffraction (LEED), and photoemission (XPS/AES). A dedicated ultrahigh vacuum system is available for an exclusive use. The responsibility for such an UHV system comes along with some effort in maintenance. Hence, a profound technical understanding and practical skills are strongly demanded.

Hands-on experience of handling a UHV system

Conduction and evaluation of experiments on the growth of oxide supported metal islands using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)
Characterization of the temperature-dependent evolution of surface structure, morphology and chemistry using STM, PEEM, LEED, XPS/AES
Drafting of publications and presentation of results
Teaching support by supervising practical courses and mentoring students in the laboratory
The possibility of PhD graduation is provided
We offers a part time (50 %) PhD student position. The position can start immediately and its duration is limited for three years. The salary will be commensurate with the qualifications of the successful candidate within the salary scale 13 TV-L.
