The German Research Foundation-funded Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1382
"The gut-liver-axis, - functional circuits and therapeutic targets"
at the RWTH Aachen University Hospital is seeking candidates for
5 PhD student positions, with the salary corresponding to level TV-L 13, 65% available immediately for a duration of three years.
Education within the CRC1382 is organized in the new structured educational PhD program of the Graduate School "Gut-Liver-Axis" and offers beside
the research project-related work interesting educational modules that cover topics linking basic life science and translational clinical research.
The major aim of the CRC1382 is a better understanding of the interaction between gut and liver and the development of novel therapeutic strategies for hepatic
and intestinal diseases. The mutual interaction between gut and liver is facilitated by a magnitude of functional links on the anatomical, cellular and molecular
level. The portal vein transports blood from the intestine to the liver. Conversely, hepatic metabolites reach the intestine via the bile ducts. Endocrine mediators,
cytokines, bile acids, migrating immune cells and proinflammatory constituents of the enteric microbiota thereby intimately link both organs.
Within the CRC1382 22 scientists will work together in 15 different research projects to study molecular, immunological, metabolic, microbiological, systems
biological and medical aspects of the enterohepatic cooperation in order to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for hepatic and intestinal diseases.
We are seeking highly motivated students holding a Master degree or equivalent in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology or Molecular Medicine with
experimental research experience and strong interest in immunology, cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, and/or bioinformatics. Strong motivation to work
in a competitive research environment and good English language proficiency (verbally and written) are expected.
We offer a highly dynamic research environment in an interdisciplinary clinical and basic research setting with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. The
participating research groups from preclinical and clinical disciplines such as gastroenterology, transplant surgery, pediatrics, cardiovascular research,
immunology, cell biology, microbiology and bioinformatics are mainly located at the academic hospital of the RWTH Aachen University. The RWTH Aachen with
more than 40,000 students and almost 6000 academic staff represents one of the largest universities in Germany.
The RWTH Aachen University is certified as a family-friendly university and offers a dual career program for partner hiring. We particularly welcome and encourage
applications from women, disabled people and ethnic minority groups, recognizing they are underrepresented across RWTH Aachen University. The principles of fair and
open competition apply and appointments will be made on merit.
