The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Your responsibilities include:
PhD position within the SFB 1349 "Fluorine-specific interactions": The goal is to develop sustainable MOF materials capable of selectively adsorbing environmentally hazardous fluorinated compounds such as PFASs. Specific tasks include:
  • Linker design and MOF structure control for selective adsorption of PFASs due to fluorine-specific interactions
  • Investigation of the extent to which pore size and geometry, as well as functionalities exposed at the walls, can be rationally tailored to achieve and optimise the selectivity of PFASs adsorption
  • Synthesis of MOF materials from common non-toxic metals and stabilisation in aqueous solutions 
  • Investigation of active regeneration of MOF materials using (solar) light regenerated
Your qualifications:
  • Successfully completed university degree (master's/diploma) in chemistry
  • Experience with mechanochemistry
  • Experience in characterisation of solids (XRD, NMR, Raman, DSC)
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured way of working, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn as well as flexibility
