PhD student (m/f/d) in the area of structure-property relationships of metallic glasses

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Your responsibilities include:
Graduate research towards a phd in the area of structure-property relationships of metallic glasses based on an DFG project:
- Characterization of local elastic properties of metallic glasses by mechanical analysis (nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy)
- Casting of metallic glasses in an arc-melter and sample preparation
- Thorough documentation of experiments and processing of experimental output
- Interaction with the supervisors on a regular basis to present and discuss experimental findings and identify relevant results
- Publication of results in scientific peer reviewed journals
- Dissemination of results at workshops and conferences
Your qualifications:
- Succesfully completed scientific university degree (materials science, physics or comparable)
- Very good knowledge in the field of solid-state and materials physics, preferably including amorphous solids
- Research experience with experimental mechanical techniques and microstructural characterization of solids
- A strong commitment to the research in this project
- Willingness to design, execute, troubleshoot and write up experimental work independently
- Skills in data analysis tools (Python, Matlab, Origin)
- Good skills in scientific writing and in presenting scientific results
- Excellent English and good German language skills, both written and spoken
- Ability to work in a Team, willingness to communicate and cooperate
- Conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
- Goal-oriented and structured way of working
- Initiative/commitment, willingness and ability to make decisions
