The Institute of Neuroanatomy at the University Medical Center Goettingen is looking for a
PhD Student (f/m/d)
limited to 3 years (prolongation possible), part-time (25,025 h/week) | salary according to TV-L
The University Medical Center Göttingen is a tertiary care center and offers great development potential. Its 7,900 employees work in over 65 departments and facilities to provide top-quality patient care, excellent research and modern teaching. Göttingen, “City of Science”, located near the center of Germany, the University Medical Center Göttingen is embedded in the city’s attractive network of scientific research facilities.
The Institute for Neuroanatomy is specialized on the functional anatomy of the mammalian brain. With up-to-date transgenic mouse models and high-end slice electrophysiology, we want to understand how synaptic networks in the cerebral cortex are organized to process tactile information coming from the larges whiskers on the snout. A special focus is on GABAergic neurons of the barrel cortex.
In this exciting PhD project, we will use a broad spectrum of electrophysiological, immunohistochemical, microscopic and behavioral methods on intersectional mouse lines labeling VIP-interneurons. The technically very demanding approach includes in detail: electrophysiological characterization and biocytin-filling of pre- and postsynaptic neurons from paired patch-clamp recordings in vitro, ideally combined with patch-seq.
Your tasks:
- Dual / triple whole-cell recordings of genetically labelled neurons
- Biocytin filling and morphological reconstruction of labelled neurons
- Data analysis, statistics and manuscript drafting
Your profile:
- The successful candidate must have a master degree in the natural sciences and hands-on experience with neurophysiology (whole-cell patch-clamp recordings)
- We expect a strong enthusiasm for experimental neuroscience questions and a highly motivated candidate with very good communication skills
What we offer:
- Structured promotion in the GGNB (Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences)
- All necessary training (building on your previous recording skills)
- Well-equipped and lively laboratory
- Possibility to work in a team with adequate supervision
