The University of Konstanz, with its "Institutional Strategy to promote
Top-Level Research", has been receiving continuous funding
since 2007 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the
German Federal and State Governments.
The Research Training Group
"R3 - Responses to biotic and abiotic changes,
Resilience and Reversibility of lake ecosystems" funded by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and based at the University of Konstanz welcomes
applications for a
PhD-Position
(Salary Scale 13 TV-L / 65%)
for a motivated student interested in gaining a Ph.D. in the field of Limnology/
Plankton Ecology. The contract is limited to three years. The position is
to be filled
as soon as possible.
The position is placed in the research project
"The role of mixotrophs for
carbon flow dynamics and nutrient regeneration" and deals with the idea that
during oligotrophication of Lake Constance, P-recycling patterns and the functioning
of the whole microbial food web were crucially affected by an increase of
mixotrophic bacterivores (flagellates).
The work involves laboratory experiments in chemostats with model food webs and
chemostats with natural food webs, using inocula from the lake. Impact of different
bacterivores on the bacterial community will be determined by 16S rRNA gene
amplicon-sequencing.
Your profile:
The candidate should have a Master degree in Biology, preferably with some
knowledge in Aquatic Ecology or Limnology, and should be interested in laboratory
techniques like chemostats and microcosms. Further requirements include the
capability of conducting independent research, scientific writing, good communication
skills in English, and amenability to work with project partners. Proficiency
in German is advantageous but not a requirement. The successful candidate should
show an exceptional level of motivation, and readiness to push a demanding
research project forward.
We offer:
- a structured Ph.D. program within the Research Training Group R3
- working in a young creative team
- an interesting and dynamic working environment
- innovative multifaceted research activities
