invites applications for
a position as

PhD position in experimental atmospheric physics

This position is to be filled as soon as possible up to 3 years and with 65 % of the tariff working hours.
Salary: E 13 TV-L
Professional and personal requirements:
  • Above-average university degree (Master or comparable) in physics, meteorology, chemistry or a related natural science
  • Experience with scientific instrumentation and experimental techniques (particularly useful will be experience in trace gas analysis, gas chromatography or mass spectrometry)
  • Very good command of written and spoken English
  • Willingness to participate in field experiments at domestic and abroad locations for time periods of several weeks
  • Background in atmospheric sciences will be of advantage, but is not absolutely required
Responsibilities and duties:
Within the frame of co-ordinated national and international research projects, the atmospheric physics group investigates processes of trace gas transport in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere and their role in global climate change and in stratospheric ozone depletion. A particular scientific focus is on the effect of increasing anthropogenic emissions in the Asian region, which are lifted to the tropopause region by the Asian monsoon and then dispersed globally in the stratosphere. Another focus is on investigating the impact of polar ozone depletion on the lower mid-latitude stratosphere. In order to address these issues, our group conducts airborne measurements of a number of greenhouse and/or ozone-depleting trace gases using self-developed state-of-the-art instrumentation on board the high-altitude research aircraft HALO.
The successful candidate will work in a team and
  • advance methods for ultra-sensitive trace gas analysis by gas chromatograhic techniques,
  • conduct aircraft-borne measurements of the distribution of various trace gases up to 15 km altitude during upcoming field experiments based in Alaska (in summer 2023) and northern Sweden,
  • scientifically analyse the obtained data, particularly regarding transport processes in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere within the context of global climate change.
This is a qualification position in the sense of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG), which serves to support a doctoral program. The position is temporary for the duration of the doctoral process, but initially up to 3 years. An extension for the completion of the doctorate is possible within the time limits of the WissZeitVG.
