PhD position (f/m) Working Group Physical-biogeochemical coupling of marine systems
The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is offering
(subject to funding of the project) the following positions in the project EVAR
(Effects of variability in physical forcing on carbon and oxygen budgets)
starting on the 01/01/2019:
PhD position (part-time) Benthos Ecology
The successful candidate will work in the group "Ecology of benthic organisms" in
collaboration with other team members of the project EVAR. The major task will be to
investigate the upwelling variability and by which mechanisms and up to which level
can abundant macrobenthic species survive fluctuations in oxygen availability and
how does their activity change the benthic fluxes? To clarify this, we will initially
investigate the distribution of macrobenthic organisms along transects with changing
availability of oxygen in the bottom water. In addition, we will assess the abundance
of macrobenthic species in the in situ and ex situ experiments planned to quantify
benthic fluxes and thereby reveal, how the composition and activity of benthic
macro-organisms affect the fluxes between sediment and water column. In the frame
of this project two expeditions with the research vessel Meteor of several weeks are

PhD position (part-time) Biogeochemistry
The PhD candidate will work both in the groups "Microbial Ecology" and "Trace gas
chemistry", and collaborate with other team members of the project EVAR. The major task
will be to investigate regulating mechanisms of trace gas production (N2O, CH4) in the
Benguela upwelling system (Namibia) and to identify responsible microorganisms. In the
frame of this project two expeditions with the research vessel Meteor of several weeks
and accompanying laboratory studies with microbial communities at IOW are planned.
The successful applicant will work closely together with two PostDocs addressing
microbial community analysis and trace gas transport and flux.

The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Association, engaged in
system analysis of coastal and marginal seas, with special focus on the Baltic
Sea. The scientists of the four departments (Physical Oceanography, Marine
Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology) cooperate within
the framework of a joint research program.
