The Chair of Aroma and Smell Research and the Machine Learning and Data Analytics Lab at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invite applications for 2 PhD positions in Odour Chemistry/Chemistry and 1 PhD position in Computer Science/Biomedical Engineering. We are about to start a project on chemocommunication entitled
"Human body odours: exploring chemical signatures"
Background: Chemical signals play a major role in physiological processes and are potent modulators of behaviour. The possible implication of chemosensory information in human social interaction, however, has long been neglected. Despite this, evidence is accumulating that an individual's chemical signature bears not only information about genetically determined traits, but also about transient states such as the individual's emotional or health status. The emerging field of human chemocommunication hence offers the intriguing possibility to make use of body odour signatures as an unobtrusive measure of internal states. The goal of this project is to develop tools for a new chemocommunication platform that is about to be established in a collaborative Emerging Fields project at the FAU. The consortium includes data scientists, psychologists, medical scientists, and chemists. Regular exchange is planned within the consortium. The successful candidate is thus expected to be an avid team worker.
FAU is one of the largest universities in Germany and has five faculties covering the entire spectrum of academic disciplines - from the humanities, theology and medicine through to law and economics, science, and engineering. The Chair of Aroma and Smell Research at the FAU uses a diverse range of analytical, sensory, and psychological methods to identify and quantify odorous molecules and their impact on human behaviour. Within the above project, analytical tools for body odour analysis will be developed and applied. The Machine Learning and Data Analytics Lab at the FAU develops machine learning algorithms and ubiquitous computing systems. The aim of the MaD Lab is to contribute ML and AI research that is applicable to real-world interaction settings. Requirements: Computer Science: Candidates for this position should have a master or comparable degree in Computer Science or a related discipline (Medical Engineering, Software Engineering, .). Odour chemistry: Candidates for this position should have a master or comparable degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Chemistry, or related disciplines, and experience in analytical chemistry, synthesis, or biochemistry.
The ideal candidates show strong enthusiasm about working self-dependently in interdisciplinary environments. The candidates should also blend expertise in their fields of research with a keen interest in the disciplines involved in the project (chemistry, data science, medicine).
