Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU)
PhD position (m/f/d)
for Experimental Physics
The Christian Albrechts University in Kiel is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, dating back to 1665, offering a wide range of subjects. It hosts two clusters of excellence “Future Ocean” and “Inflammation at the Interface” and four Priority Research Areas contributing to German Excellence Strategies. With its nine faculties and its interfaculty centers, it offers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas, supported by the administration with its services.
In the department of Nano-optics, located in the Institute for Experimental und Applied Physics of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel we investigate the optical response of quantum materials using electron beams and optical microscopes. The purpose is to trigger the exciton dynamics and their transport in van der Waals and two-dimensional materials as well as hybrid systems, and control them with light and electron beams.
Apply and improve the electrochemistry setup combined with a dark-field optical microscope for growing single crystalline gold flakes
Apply optical dark-field spectroscopy techniques for investing the optical response of two-dimensional materials and hybrid systems
Analyze experimental data using computers and perform simulations using in-house-developed and commercial numerical codes (for example COMSOL)
Develop theoretical models for optical excitations
Teaching (teaching language is German)
MSc degree in physics, electrical engineering, or physical chemistry with strong track records
Strong interest in interdisciplinary research bridging materials science and optics
Prior experience with spectroscopy and optical setups
Prior experience with plasmons, electrodynamic simulations and the necessary expertise in solid state physics, electromagnetism and nano optics
Good communication skills are essential
Applicants should be highly motivated and independent
WE OFFER YOU
An interactive and supportive research environment and access to excellent research infrastructures
