The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

The advertised position is part of a bilateral project between the BAM and the institute of resource ecology (IRE) at the Helmholtz-Center Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR, Dresden). The IRE performs research to protect humans and the environment from hazards caused by pollutants resulting from technical processes that produce energy and raw materials.

The tasks are performed both in Berlin (at BAM) and in Dresden (at HZDR).

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:
Conducting experiments and analytics on high-level radioactive waste management associated with the "Nuclear Waste Management, Safety and Radiation Research" program in the Helmholtz Association's "Energy" research field. These include in particular:

  • Comparative analysis of corrosive, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in anaerobic dynamic flow and static batch systems as pure culture
  • Simulation of environmental influences and subsequent investigation of corroded metals
  • Investigation of metallic materials on microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC)
  • Characterization and identification of corrosion products by Tof-SIMS, CLSM, SEM, RAMAN-spectroscopy
  • Analysis of microbial diversity
  • Work with Radionuclides and their interactions with potentially formed secondary phases
  • Presentation of research results as reports and publications as well as at international conferences and meetings
Your qualifications:
  • Excellent MSc. or equivalent degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a comparable area. In the case of foreign educational qualifications, please send us the relevant proof of equivalence with a German qualification.   • Basic knowledge in electrochemistry, mineralogy or geology
  • Knowledge and experience in anaerobic techniques is desirable
  • Experience in molecular biology and sequencing (extraction of DNA, PCR, RISA, RT-PCR) is beneficial
  • Good verbal and written German and English skills are required
  • Good skills in scientific writing and presenting in front of an audience
  • Interest in interdisciplinary work as well as independent, well-organized, structured, careful and self-responsible working methods
  • Commitment, ability to cooperate and work in a team
  • Willingness to work partially in Berlin (at the BAM) and in Dresden (at the HZDR)
