The Ceramics group (Prof. Jürgen Rödel) at the Department of
Materials and Earth Science at TU Darmstadt has an opening for a:
Ph.D. student in the area of
“Charged dislocation as a device“
(Code No. 535)
starting Jan. 1st, 2021 for a duration of 3 years. For the first 12 month
a part-time position of 50 % is available, for the remaining 2 years a
fulltime position 100 % is offered.
The ceramics group received funding for a Koselleck project by the
DFG over 1.25 Mil. € to investigate fundamental physical mechanisms
of charged dislocations in bulk oxides for electronic, ionic and thermal
transport. Several options for producing controlled dislocation structures
have been completed. The goal of this particular project is the
exploration of the flexophotovoltaic effect (Science 360, 904, (2018))
and the influence of dislocations on Schottky barriers. The project is in
collaboration with Prof. Marin Alexe, University of Warwick, UK,
where the candidate will work about 50 % of the time. The position is
part of a team of now 6 PhD students and postdocs.
Your tasks:
Production of controlled dislocation structures by thermomechanical
techniques as well as by manufacturing of bicrystals (Darmstadt),
atomic characterization of dislocation cores (Darmstadt, Warwick,
international Partners) and investigations into the electronic structure
and electrical conductivity (Warwick).
Your profile:
- Essential requirements:
- Excellent Master's degree in Materials Science, Physics or Physical
Chemistry
- Very good knowledge of spoken and written English
- Strong interest in scientific research and above-average motivation
to manage the PhD project combined with a strong desire for international
collaboration and ability to work in a team
- Desired skills:
- Strong academic background in one or more of the following
subjects: solid state physics, metal plasticity, electronic structure
- Demonstrated ability for independent scientific research
We are offering a challenging environment with collaborations with
theoreticians, experts in local structure, mechanics and semiconductor
physics but also room for your own initiative.
Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given.
The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications
of the candidate.
The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number
of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In
case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at
least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are
according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to
the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV – TU Darmstadt). Part-time
employment is generally possible.
Applications should include scientific CV (including list of
publications in peer-reviewed journals, if any), courses and grades,
motivation letter and contact data from two references. Please direct
specific inquiries to Prof. Jürgen Rödel and send applications to:
