FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure is one of the leading provider of scientific information and services and a member of the Leibniz Association. Our core task is the professional support of science and industry with research and patent information as well as the development of innovative services in the field of scientific information infrastructure, such as research data management, knowledge graphs and digital platforms. For this purpose, we conduct in-house research, cooperate with renowned universities and research associations and maintain an international network. FIZ Karlsruhe is a GmbH (a limited liability company) with a non-profit character and one of the major infrastructure institutions in Germany.

At our Berlin location, we research and develop the information system zbMATH Open and products and services derived from it. zbMATH Open aims to combat plagiarism by devising novel methods to identify potential plagiarism cases automatically. For the innovative research and development tasks associated with the zbMATH Open project, we are looking for a Ph.D. Candidate / Junior Researcher (m/f/x) for our Berlin location in the fields of:

Job Description:
The offered position will be in the research team of the Mathematics Department at FIZ Karlsruhe, in Berlin. As a Ph.D. candidate, you will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Bela Gipp (Chair of Data & Knowledge Engineering at Bergische Universität Wuppertal (BUW)). Online teaching (at BUW) is not mandatory but possible. The work will be in the DFG Project "Analyzing Mathematics to Detect Disguised Academic Plagiarism" https://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/projekt/437179652?language=en

The position is available at the earliest possible date and is limited to 3 years.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Master's degree (or equivalent university degree) in computer science, mathematics, or a related discipline with the desire to complete a Ph.D. degree; qualified candidates who are about to complete their master's degree are also encouraged to apply
  • Strong affinity for mathematics, formal notations, and interdisciplinary research at the intersection of computer science and mathematics
  • Outstanding analytical competence and an eagerness to collaborate and work in research teams
  • Superior organization and communication skills
  • Commitment to the guidelines of "good research practice" as defined by the DFG
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Fluent German is highly beneficial
