The High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) is Germany's first national supercomputing centre. It operates one of the fastest supercomputers in the world and offers access to supercomputers for universities and research institutions as well as industrial partners. HLRS also holds a leading position worldwide in the research areas of parallel computing, cloud computing and high- performance data analysis and is significantly involved in international and national research projects.

For the development of new solutions and support services on the interface between leading edge scientific applications (primarily from the CFD and global system science fields) and high performance computing systems (especially for the flagship HPC system Hawk) we offer two positions in a national project called SiVeGCS as

Performance Engineer (f/m/d)
for Scientific Software (up to TV-L 13)
HLRS_01_2023

Your tasks:
You will be working as a scientist in an international team on analyzing and improving I/O or scalability of applications to make more efficient use of hardware resources on leading supercomputing systems. In order to do so, you will closely cooperate with academic and industrial users of those systems. You will bring in your knowledge and expertise in both, developing innovative solutions as well as their practical implementation.

Qualifications:
  • A university degree, ideally in the area of engineering, natural sciences, mathematics or computer science
  • Knowledge of I/O systems or high-performance networks deployed in HPC systems
  • Knowledge in one of the following fields:
    • Optimization of parallel I/O
    • Parallel Programming (MPI, OpenMP) and optimization of parallel efficiency
  • Experience in analyzing the performance of HPC applications, in particular usage of profiling tools
  • Good experience in Linux-based environments
  • Good programming skills in at least one higher-order programming language (Fortran or C/C++)
  • Strong focus on creativity, proactivity, conceptual thinking and continuous improvement including the ability to work under own initiative
  • Good language skills in English
Ideally, your profile will be supplemented by:
  • Initial experience in HPC systems
  • Initial experience w.r.t. numerical methods typically used in scientific applications
  • Initial experience in programming for GPUs
  • Knowledge of massively parallel distributed memory architectures
  • At least basic knowledge of the German language

The contract for this full-time position in the project SiVeGCS is restricted until end of 2024 (end of funding period) in accordance with the TzBfG. However, dependent on the project situation and available funding, HLRS typically advocates for a contract extension. The working conditions and also the salary are determined by the regulations for public servants, specifically TV-L (Tarifvertrag der Länder).
