At the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, one of the 85 institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, physicists, chemists, and biologists create knowledge of long-term relevance to life and basic medical sciences. Currently, our around 270 employees are divided into four departments and one Max Planck Research Group. In addition, the institute is part of the Health + Life Science Alliance Heidelberg Mannheim – an association of the leading life science research institutions in the region.
The Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, Heidelberg, invites applications for a
Max Planck Research Group Leader (m/f/div)
Code Number 15/2023
The Max Planck Institute for Medical Research was founded in 1927 with the goal of using the tools of chemistry, physics, and physiology to create advances of long-term relevance to basic medical science. The current focus of the institute is to observe and manipulate in real time the complex dynamics of the interactions between macromolecules in the living cell, in health, and disease. For more information about the Institute, see

As part of this program, we are seeking an outstanding scientist at the beginning of his / her career with a passion to develop chemical, physical, and material-based approaches to analyse and control biomolecular functions in cells at the nanoscale. Candidates should have an exceptional scientific track record and an ambitious plan for cutting-edge research to develop novel tools to advance our understanding of the molecular physiology of cells.
The successful candidate will develop an independent research program for a period of five years. A merit-based extension of up to four years is possible. Funding includes a German W2 position (equivalent to an assistant professorship), resources for the hiring of scientific staff, and a budget to realize the project. The group will have access to the world-class scientific facilities of the institute, including optical microscopy, protein expression, and characterization, mass spectrometry, as well as biomaterials.
Applications should include:
- a cover letter including your motivation to join our institute
- your curriculum vitae including your publication list
- a two-page summary each of your past achievements and your future research plans
- up to three of your most important papers
