Within the framework of the „Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses“ – the federal and state program for the enhancement of junior scholarship and research – twenty-three tenure-track junior professorships will be advertised. Currently, we are in search of eligible candidates for the following Tenure-Track Junior Professorship at the Mercator School of Management – Faculty of Business Administration (MSM) and the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST), a central scientific institute at the University of Duisburg-Essen:

“New Economic Geography/East Asia“
(Salary Class Group W1 LBesO W - with Tenure Track as per W2)
The junior professorship is grounded in the Mercator School of Management (MSM), but linked closely to the Institute of East Asian Studies (In-EAST). It will be responsible for research and teaching in the field of theoretical and empirical (New) Economic Geography both in general and with a regional focus on East Asia. The successful candidate's doctoral degree and research focus will be in a relevant field, e. g. economics, geography or area studies. Command of an East Asian language is desirable; academic experience working in or on the East Asian region (China, Japan, Korea) is a requirement.
The MSM and IN-EAST expect successful applicants to contribute actively to the research profile of both institutions. This involves willingness and clear potential to cooperate within our research clusters in areas like international economic relations, regional and industrial economics, institutional integration processes in East Asia, and transnational issues of East Asia, the latter established in conjunction with Ruhr-University Bochum under the auspices of the Association for Research on East Asia under the University Alliance Ruhr (AREA-Ruhr).
Applicants must additionally demonstrate relevant academic teaching experience. The junior professorship contributes regional studies courses taught in English and German to the degree programs of the Institute of East Asian Studies and the Mercator School of Management at the levels of BA and MA studies. Candidates without German language skills are expected to develop a working knowledge of German within three years upon appointment.
The MSM combines the Ruhr Area's strong regional identity with a distinctive international orientation. Its focus on international level business and economics research places it among the leading economics faculties in Germany.
IN-EAST is the largest institute for contemporary East Asian studies research in Europe. It combines social science and economics approaches with language-based regional studies.
What We Expect:
Publications in the field of expertise in peer-reviewed journals are expected, especially in leading international journals.
Experience in the procurement of competitive third-party funding, involvement in international research as well as relevant international experience are desirable. Furthermore, experience in leadership in science is beneficial.
The University of Duisburg-Essen places great emphasis on excellence in teaching. Candidates must present their teaching methodology, showing its relevance to the research profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Applicants must show aptitude for participation in academic self-administration.
The hiring requirements comply with § 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (HG).
Teaching requirements currently are four hours of teaching during the first, and five hours of teaching during the second employment stage of the Junior Professorship. Employment is contingent on the presentation of the corresponding requirements for temporary civil service. The duration of employment complies with § 39 Sect. 5 HG.
