The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials and analytical sciences.

Your tasks:
The newly established division is intended to advance the development of new materials, through a combination of data science and AI, to complement BAM's experimental research work in the simulation of safety-relevant material properties.
The task is comprised of the technical and administrative management of Division 6.4 "Materials Informatics," which includes:

  • Strategic, personnel and technical management of the division
  • Management and motivation of a team of qualified employees
  • Initiation and implementation of research in the field of material information and data-driven material synthesis on a scale appropriate to compliment simulations on the atomic level
  • Support as a stimulus and the acquisition of externally funded research projects
  • Conception of ideas for young scientists and their supervision within the scope of their research activities
  • Participation in the design of change processes and proactive involvement in the further development of BAM's subject areas as a manager, especially in the field of materials
  • Positioning of BAM as a federal research institution through participation with national and international standardization bodies, advisory boards and scientific networks
  • Expansion of existing and development of new collaborations with national and international partners
Your essential qualifications:
  • Successfully completed an above-average scientific university degree in natural sciences or engineering, specializing in chemistry, physics or materials science and a very good doctorate in one of the aforementioned fields.
  • In the case of foreign educational qualifications, we request that you send us the corresponding proof of equivalence with a German qualification.   • Extensive experience in using quantum chemical calculations, data mining and machine learning for understanding and developing materials
  • Extensive experience in the creation and publication of first author publications, as well as the presentation of scientific results in the field of materials informatics, which are documented by a publication list in peer-reviewed journals (for example web of science reference)
  • Proven competence in combining or working at the interface of experiment and theory as demonstrated by relevant publications
  • Extensive experience in the independent processing of scientific questions
  • Several years of experience in the supervision of young scientists
  • Experience in project management
  • Leadership Competence
  • A team-oriented working style, with very good communication skills and a strong ability to reflect
  • Strong analytical, conceptual and creative thinking, negotiating skills and a high degree of decision-making ability
  • High degree of flexibility and resilience
  • Business fluent English
  • High competence with software engineering and working with HPC infrastructure
  • Good knowledge of several programming languages (e.g. Python, C++)
Your further qualifications:
  • Several years of experience in science management are an advantage
  • Personnel and professional management experience in scientific and technical areas is an advantage
  • Several years of experience in standardization committee work (rule-making, scientific policy advice) are an advantage

Applicants who meet the prerequisites will generally receive a salary according to BesGr. B 1 BBesO. A promotion according to BesGr. B 2 BBesO is possible at a later date provided that the applicant is suitably qualified, competent and performs professionally within the framework of the available positions.

In the case of applicants who do not meet the career requirements for federal officials at the time of recruitment, a non-tariff remuneration shall be agreed upon. The probation period in accordance with § 34 BLV and § 31 TVöD shall apply in this case.

Candidates from the public sector shall be asked for a declaration of consent in order to consult their personal files. At the same time, you shall be prepared to carry out any subsequent inspection that may be necessary in accordance with the German Screening Act (Sicherheitsüberprüfungsgesetz - SÜG).
