a vacancy for the position of
Head of the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Disarmament, Arms Control and Risk
The full-time position, available from 1 October 2018 or at the next possible date, will be remunerated
at pay group 15 (EG 15) of the public sector pay agreement of the City of Hamburg
The IFSH is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Hamburg that is supported
by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The research activities of the IFSH concentrate
on current developments and challenges in peace and security with a focus on the
Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian areas. Knowledge transfer to politics and society is a fundamental
aspect of the institute's work.
To head the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Disarmament, Arms Control and Risk Technologies,
we are seeking someone with experience in research and policy advising who will
lead and strategically develop the IFSH's research and advisory activities focusing on the
analysis and assessment of armament technology and related risks.
Providing academic and administrative leadership and managing the strategic
development of the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Disarmament, Arms Control
and Risk Technologies (from 1 October 2019)
Carrying out research and providing expert policy advice in the fields of arms control
and disarmament in relation to weapons of mass destructions, conventional disarmament
and arms-control regimes, and/or the development and management of risk technologies.
Procuring external funds and managing research and advisory projects in the above
Teaching and supervisory activities within the scope of the Master of Peace and Security
Studies degree offered by the IFSH and the University of Hamburg.
Assumption of responsibilities for overarching strategic issues relevant to the work of
A university degree in the natural or social sciences or other degree relevant for the position as well as an excellent doctoral qualification in a relevant field.
Academic expertise in the fields of disarmament, arms control and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; conventional arms control and arms-control regimes; and/or the development and management of new risk technologies, demonstrated by a record of high-quality academic publication.
Scientific and technical expertise in the fields of risk and armament technologies, disarmament and arms control
Several years' experience in the development, application and management of academic research and advisory projects. Experience of international research and advisory cooperation preferred.
Relevant teaching experience preferred.
Excellent German and English.
Communicative competence, ability to work as part of a team, self-motivated, organizational ability.
